Challenge Accepted - Now What?

He said, "Okay!" Now where do we begin?

As we get ready to begin our journey of teaching/learning to cook, I am wondering what is the best approach to get Grant started. I don't want to scare him off from the challenge, and I don't want to waste his time, either. He is a serious kid, quiet, some would say shy, but mostly he's cynical and funny. At least that is how he and I interact together.

And so I am going to go to the source and ask him what he wants to learn how to cook first. Does he want to be able to make breakfast food? Scrambled eggs? French Toast? Or does he want to start with a real meal? Should we make a list of all the things he likes to eat and tackle that? Should we just start with the basics like how to chop an onion, mince garlic, measure liquid/dry ingredients? What would a kid who has only cooked one thing in his life (and that was under duress) want to start with?

His answer may surprise you....but that is for the next post!

A little about our family....

I was lucky as a child to have a very close relationship with my grandmother. She taught me to persevere, keep my chin up, be creative, and cook. We made simple meals and desserts together, pouring through cut out recipes and dreaming of all things yummy. My parents were divorced, but I was able to learn more about my dad through her eyes and it was obvious they were very close. Actually, my dad and his mom were so close. When I had a son, I hoped for the same type of relationship, and amazingly, I have it.

He's Not the Only One

In fact, there are five more!

Our family is made up of six kids - yes, six. We are a blended family and blessed to raise our nephew as well. As the kids have grown and set off on their own, we've been intentional about creating special times and memories with each of them. This challenge was created for the child who was least likely to accept. But accept, he did!
